Methodological activities of the Periodicals Department
Methodological and consulting activities regarding periodical publications for libraries and publishers
The Periodicals Department provides methodological and consulting activities regarding the purchase of foreign literature. It is an authority in periodicals cataloguing (name and subject description) and provides assistance in legal deposit copies of periodicals for libraries and publishers.
Acquisition and cataloguing of periodicals
Acquisition of printed periodicals published in the Czech Republic obtained by legal deposit, donation, exchange or purchase and purchase of selected foreign journals and newspapers. Periodicals are acquired for the NLCR collection on the basis of current legislation on legal deposit copies, by donation, or exchange. The department also purchases selected Czech and foreign periodicals for the periodicals reading room and for other reading rooms and departments. It retroactively completes missing titles, especially of bohemical periodicals, and retroactively catalogues documents from historical collections. The acquired periodicals are catalogued according to the valid cataloguing rules (name and subject description) and kept in the department for five years. After five years, the periodicals are transferred from the department to the Conservation and Universal Library Fund for further storage.
Legal deposit copies of periodicals
Acquisition of periodicals for the collection of the NLCR on the basis of legal deposit copies legislation. The Periodicals Department ensures the acquisition of periodicals for the collection of the NLCR on the basis of legal deposit copies legislation and checks the completeness of their submission. Act No. 46/2000 Coll., on the Rights and Obligations in the Publication of Periodicals and on Amendments to Certain Other Acts (the Press Act), as amended, applies to the legal deposit copies of periodicals. Titles obtained in this way are processed according to the valid cataloguing rules in the online catalogue of the NLCR - NKC database. These records are part of the Czech National Bibliography.
VISK 8/A Information Resources
The project ”Multi-licensing of electronic information resources“ ensures the availability of Czech and foreign information resources in public libraries in the Czech Republic The project, which falls under the VISK 8/A sub-programme, is a continuation of one-year projects carried out since 2000. It ensures the availability of Czech and foreign resources that contain up-to-date professional and popular educational information and are intended for a wide range of readers. The project includes the Anopress, PressReader, and ASPI databases. Each year, 65 libraries participate, and a list of them is published on the website http://visk.nkp.cz/visk-8-a.
The projects build on each other seamlessly so that access to the databases is not interrupted. Professional training sessions are organised for libraries; an e-mail or telephone contact is available for inquiries.
Electronic information resources within CzechElib
Manages electronic information resources acquired within the consortium of the National Centre of CzechElib
The Periodicals Department manages electronic information resources for the NLCR acquired within the National Centre of CzechElib. They currently include 17 electronic resources in the fields of science, music, humanities, and literature. The CzechELib National Centre ensures the purchase of key digital resources for the entire research and education community in the Czech Republic, ensures their management, including usage statistics, and supports open-access publishing.
Book Covers Project
The project makes book covers and other book elements available The Book Covers Project was created in 2008 thanks to the Moravian Library and is now managed by the South Bohemian Research Library in České Budějovice. The original intention to create a central depository of book covers was gradually extended to other book elements (contents pages, annotations, etc.).
The project involves libraries from all over the Czech Republic, publishers, and booksellers. Book covers are provided by libraries that scan documents from their library collections. The database currently contains around 2.7 million covers and approximately 840,000 content pages of Czech and foreign publications.
Individual titles can be searched either directly on the obalkyknih.cz website or in the library's online catalogue. The Periodicals Department contributes to the project by scanning 150 titles. The cover image is placed to the right of the record, so it is possible to see the contents of the book or magazine before the reader orders it. Users can search by ISBN, ISSN, EAN, CNB number, OCLC, or their own identifier, or search for authors by authority ID or name.
