Repairs and performs conservation and restoration interventions and cleaning of modern library collections.
Its primary activity is the conservation repairs of the modern library collections of the NLCR. The bookbinding workshop repairs and binds or rebinds books and documents from the 20th century onwards. When creating a new book binding, the mechanical durability and long-term stability of the materials used, as well as the technological execution of the book binding, are essential. However, the aesthetic aspect is not neglected, especially in the case of historicising rebindings. The conservation workshop deals with modern collections and documents from the 19th century. Half-leather bindings are generally repaired with Japanese paper, while Japanese paper laminated with fabric, handmade paper, and other restoration materials are used for the stressed parts of the binding. The department implements a programme of preserving library collections in *protective packaging* made of appropriate materials and engages in *mechanical cleaning* of library collections. In addition to cleaning directly in the depositories or study rooms, there is a specialised workplace in the Central Depository in Hostivař, where books are cleaned after disinfection (due to possible mould spore residue, cleaning is carried out in a fume cupboard). The department also helps develop preventive measures against accidents and natural disasters.
