Science and Research
Scientific research is one of the development pillars of the NLCR.
The NLCR’s primary tasks include basic research, applied research, and experimental development, and dissemination of their results through teaching, publishing, or technology transfer. Library collections and electronic resources are used to verify research and development results, secure their rights, disseminate them, and provide information about them. The NLCR maintains systems for permanently preserving research, development, and innovation results acquired with public funds and published in the Czech Republic.
Long-Term Conceptual Development of a Research Organisation
The research activities of the NLCR are financed based on Institutional Support for the Long-Term Conceptual Development of a Research Organisation (Czech: IP DKRVO).
Conceptualisation strengthens the position of the research organisation among organisations of a similar nature. Through applied and basic research, it preserves written cultural heritage in both traditional and digital forms with the aim of better understanding and mapping it in national and international contexts and bringing it to the attention of the professional and lay public, especially in the fields of historical collections, musicology, Slavonic studies, and written heritage published after 1800. It also makes data available to researchers, international portals, and applications through digital libraries and web archives.
Scientific and International Cooperation
Long-term cooperation with Czech and foreign institutions; partnerships in the field of scientific research
The NLCR has long cooperated with a wide range of subjects throughout the academic sphere in the scientific preparation of publications and exhibitions, including many foreign institutions and individual experts. It participates in research projects (such as TEI Consortium, IIPC, ASEEES, CERL, IADA) as part of its membership in international organisations. In this way, it gains know-how, the opportunity to influence global trends in library operations, and access to data and resources. It actively participates in international conferences, where it presents research results, and also organises conferences. The NLCR welcomes important foreign visitors and delegations to whom it presents the contact points of the book cultures of the participating countries, including the presentation of their cultural heritage in the virtual environment of the Manuscriptorium digital library. International cooperation also takes place within the framework of individual scientific projects (such as TACR TL05000157 Czech Book Illustration in the Early Modern Period (https://starfos.tacr.cz/cs/projekty/TL05000157). The NLCR has long cooperated on worldwide catalogues and inventories, and the Slavonic Library is in contact with Slavists and Slavonic institutions worldwide. Webarchive has been a member of the International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC) since 2007 and is actively involved in joint projects, participating in international meetings, and working with other archives. It is also involved in international projects that protect library collections.
